CROSSFIT was never meant to be a permanent gig for me.
I'd won a free three-month trial to a new CrossFit box opening in my hometown and I saw it as an opportunity.
An opportunity to get a big head start on my traditional soccer pre-season, lose a few kilos and hit the ground running.
Life had a different plan for me though.
New work commitments prevented me from training and playing regularly so I decided to stick with CrossFit for a little longer before I found another team sport.
But this was years ago - I'm not a footballer anymore - I'm a CrossFitter. And I love it.
I love that days when I can throw a barbell down and dance. Dance like there's no one watching me - pausing only to accept a 'high five' or two because my box know I just hit a PB.
I love the days when I'm flat on my back post WOD, struggling for breath and questioning my sanity.
And as painful as they are, I love the days when I feel broken, beaten and borderline humiliated post WOD. The days when I walk straight out the door vowing to never try that weight, movement or scaling option again. Days when I think about not going back, but by the time I get home I've settled on the fact I'll just take an extra rest day and be back as per usual.
And the CrossFit community, god how I love the CrossFit community - so much strength, passion & desire.
A community that gives so much but asks for so little in return.
A community that accepts everyone. A community that plays a key role in the evolution of its members just as much as CrossFit coaches and programming.
And that is why I am excited to be here - writing for Fortify Gear. An Australian brand supporting everyday athletes with their range of knee sleeves, weight belts, lifting tape & apparel. Designed for CrossFit, Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Strongman.
I consider myself to be your "everyday CrossFitter' if there is such a thing.
I shine in some areas - big lifts, barbell cycling and I can always find that last 5% to finish a WOD hard. I'm told my single arm overheard kettlebell lunges look good and I can consume FitAid with speed and ease post-WOD.
I suck in some areas - I don't have double unders, my toes to bar are very sketchy and my chest to bar are either great or horrible. My biggest barrier is lack of belief and I don't dust the chalk off my hands before I do handstand push-ups.
I'm a husband, father & geek. I take just as much joy from watching cartoons with my boys as I do hitting a 100kg squat clean.
Like I said 'Everyday CrossFitter'.
I've interviewed CrossFit superstar and twice Fittest Woman on Earth Tia-Clair Toomey as well as Fittest on Earth Masters Athlete Amanda Allen. Add Khan Porter & Sam Briggs to the mix and I talk everyday to my 'local superstars'.
And what I have discovered is that it doesn't matter who you are in CrossFit.
Who you will be is determined only by the energy you feed your heart, mind and soul.
And that's where I'm excited to step in, I want to help you help yourself.
I want to share with you the CrossFit lessons I've learned - some through trial and error, others simply by stopping to listen to my coach once in a while.
At the very least I want to give you a good read - something that inspires you to think.
But my ultimate goal is to help you build the best version of yourself.
Who is ready to take the first step on that fun, funky, strong & passion-fuelled path?
Jason - the geek who lifts.
